\n The oldest Catholic church in Tokyo, Tsukiji Church was built in 1874 on the Tsukiji Settlement site leased from the Japanese government by Father Marin of the Paris Foreign Mission, who was expanding his missionary activities in Tokyo following Yokohama. At the time, the church was still a temporary structure, but in 1878, a full-scale brick cathedral was built, and it became the center of the Catholic Church in Tokyo. In 1927, the present Greek-style wooden and mortar cathedral was completed, and in 1999, it was designated as a historical landmark by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The bell, which was cast in Rennes, France in 1876 and sent to Tsukiji Church, can still be seen on the grounds. The church is open to visitors, but attending mass on weekends is also recommended as it is a valuable experience.\n<\/p>\n
