Although it is a buzzword that has only recently come into use, “guesswork” has been practiced since ancient times. For example, the theater of Shakespeare’s time in England was greatly developed by the presence of patrons, and in Japan, Kabuki was supported by the ardent popularity of the common people and became the greatest entertainment of the Edo period. Now and in the past, the support and cheerleading of the audience is extremely important. It can be said that excellent culture has been created by the presence of people who “push and support” and support.

This exhibition introduces materials related to the “guessing culture” from a wide range of perspectives and unravels the history of the “guessing culture”. What kind of audiences existed in each period and genre, and how did they support each other? And how do people deal with “guesses” today? The exhibition will not be conducted from the producer’s point of view, but from the audience’s point of view, exposing the activities of individual audiences and their “voices”.

Event SummaryOutline

Location

Waseda University Theatre Museum, 2nd floor, 1-6-1 Nishi-Waseda, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo

Access

7 minutes from Waseda Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, 5 minutes from Waseda Station on the Toei Arakawa Line

Holding period

Monday, April 24, 2023 – Sunday, August 6, 2023

Opening Hours

10:00-17:00 (Tuesday and Friday – 19:00)

Contact Us

          03-5286-1829

entrance fee

free

closed day

April 29 (Sat., holiday), May 3 (Wed., holiday) – 5 (Fri., holiday), 10 (Wed.), June 7 (Wed.), 21 (Wed.), July 5 (Wed.), 17 (Mon., holiday), 19 (Wed.)

Related Links

Official Site

Holding period 2023.04.24 〜 2023.08.06 Unraveling the History of “Guess Culture” and Approaching the Activities and Voices of the Audience The “guessing game” is a way to support people and things you like.
