The sword is called &#8220;Katana&#8221; in contrast to &#8220;Katana,&#8221; which is a short, small sword with the blade pointing upward and attached to the belt. Originally, until around the middle of the Heian period (794-1185), it was called a &#8220;large sword&#8221; (\u5927\u5263).
