Painted in 1936, during the peak of his career, it depicts a young geiko smiling slightly at a woman’s whisper on a spring evening when cherry blossoms are falling. The expression, gestures, makeup technique, clothing, and hair tie are beautifully rendered, and one can sense Uemura Shoen’s aesthetic sense and ability to accurately depict the scene, making it one of the most popular works in the Matsuoka Museum of Art’s Japanese painting collection. There is also a cherry tree in the courtyard, and if you visit in late March, you can appreciate the masterpieces while viewing the cherry blossoms.

Event SummaryOutline

Location

Matsuoka Museum of Art 5-12-6 Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo

Access

7 minutes from Shirokanedai Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line and Toei Subway Mita Line, 15 minutes from Meguro Station on the JR Yamanote Line

Holding period

Tuesday, February 21, 2023 – Sunday, June 4, 2023

Opening Hours

10:00-17:00 (last admission 16:30), open until 19:00 on the first Friday only (last admission 18:30)

Contact Us

          03-5449-0251

admission fee

1,200 yen, 500 yen for 25 years old and younger, free for high school students and younger and those with disabilities

closed day

Mondays (or the following weekday if the Monday is a national holiday)

Related Links

Official Site

Holding period 2023.02.21 〜 2023.06.04 Beautiful people” regardless of gender or age The term “bijinga” (portraits of beautiful women) became popular as a general term after the Meiji period.
