Gunkan-maki is made when using fragile ingredients such as sea urchin, salmon roe, crab miso, and negitoro. The name &#8220;gunkanmaki&#8221; comes from its pitch-black shape, which resembles a warship when viewed from the side. The size of the nori used in gunkanmaki is usually a full-size nori cut into long, thin strips exactly one-sixth the size of the original nori. Gunkanmaki originated in Ginza Kyubei.
