It is said that fierce battles were fought between warriors led by the Taira clan and Minamoto no Yoritomo. After Yoritomo destroyed the Heike clan and established the Kamakura shogunate, a period of struggle for power continued between Yoritomo’s successors and the Hojo clan and other powerful daimyo clans.
The exhibition focuses on this period, which is also the subject of the anime “Tale of the Heike” and the NHK historical drama “Kamakura-dono no 13-nin”, and traces the rise and fall of samurai warriors such as Kiyomori Taira, Yoshitsune Minamoto, and Yoritomo Minamoto through the ukiyoe works of Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Hiroshige Utagawa, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, and others.
The featured work in this exhibition is “Dainihon Meisho Kan: Right General Minamoto no Yoritomo” by Hotei Tsukioka. The painting depicts Minamoto no Yoritomo watching over a flock of cranes as they spread their wings wide and take flight into the sky, giving us a sense of Yoritomo’s state of mind and the background of the times.
On July 8 and 14, curators will also hold slide talk events to explain the highlights of the exhibition.

Event SummaryOutline

Location

Ota Memorial Art Museum 1-10-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo

Access

5 minutes from Harajuku Station on JR Yamanote Line, 3 minutes from Meiji-jingumae Station on Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and Fukutoshin Line

Holding period

Friday, July 1 – Sunday, July 24, 2022

Opening Hours

10:30-17:30 (last admission 17:00)

Contact Us

          050-5541-8600

admission fee

800 yen

closed day

July 4, 11, 19

Related Links

Official Site

Holding period 2022.07.01 〜 2022.07.24 Tracing the Rise and Fall of Samurai Warriors through Ukiyoe The Jisho/Juei War (1180-85), known as the Genpei War, took place at the end of the Heian Period (794-1185).
