Since its founding, this long-established shop has been making boxwood combs by the side of Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. While various comb materials have appeared over time, Jusanya Comb Shop continues to carefully handcraft each comb using high-quality Satsuma boxwood, a specialty of Kagoshima.<\/p>\n\n

Boxwood combs are said to reduce static, preventing split ends and dryness. Brushing with camellia oil on a boxwood comb also gives hair a natural shine.<\/p>\n\n

Inside the shop, you may see Keichi Takeuchi, the 15th generation, making boxwood combs. The way he polishes them to make them smooth is true craftsmanship. By regularly caring for and using a boxwood comb, it becomes shinier and easier to use. When buying, you should also learn how to maintain it for long-term use. Most combs displayed in the shop are samples, and custom orders are the norm.<\/p>\n\n

In Genbun 1 (1736), the founder, a low-ranking samurai, opened a boxwood comb shop by the same Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. The name \u201cJusanya\u201d comes from adding \u201cku (9)\u201d and \u201cshi (4)\u201d to get 13. For 15 generations, the shop has continued to provide high-quality combs made with careful handwork.<\/p>\n\n
