Taisyuji Temple (Shinjuku, Tokyo)(Taisouji-Temple)

Seven Gods of FortuneNaito ShinjukuJizoYama (king of the world of the dead, who judges the dead)

The temple is located in the downtown area of Shinjuku Ni-Chome, where restaurants line the streets. It is also one of the seven gods of good fortune in Shinjuku Yamanote. Since the temple was located at the entrance to Edo on the Koshu-kaido road, you can see the “bronze statue of Jizo Bodhisattva,” the third of the Edo Rokujizo, which was enshrined at the entrance to the six roads leading into Edo. Also, since Taisoji Temple has deep ties with the Naito family that ruled this area, the statue of Enma, who was worshipped by the common people as “O-enma-san of Naito Shinjuku,” is a must-see. Because of its powerful figure with large eyes and mouth staring down at you, the temple was also worshipped for disciplining children. Other statues include the “Shiokake Jizoson,” a statue of a Jizo who sprinkles salt on people in return for their prayers, which was a rare custom.
