common variety of women’s kimono sash(nagoyaobi/nagoyaobi)

Japanese clothesclothing

It is a simplified version of the double-breasted obi, suitable for wearing with casual, fashionable kimonos. There are various theories about its history, but it is said to have been invented in Nagoya during the Taisho period (1912-1926) and spread throughout Japan. The width of the obi is 9sun (approx. 34 cm) or 8sun (approx. 30 cm). Basically, the obi is folded in half in advance from the tips of the hands to the part that forms the “tabor,” and the part that wraps around the body is made half-width from the beginning. The length is about 3.6 m, and the odaiko portion is made of a single piece of fabric. Nagoya obi with gold or silver thread can be used for semi-formal occasions.
