cherry blossom viewingwalk

This is a vast metropolitan cemetery covering an area of approximately 10 hectares that has been in existence since 1874. Many historical figures and celebrities have been laid to rest here, including Eiichi Shibusawa, a businessman active during the Meiji and Taisho periods, the Japanese-style painter Taikan Yokoyama, and the former Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama. It is also the site of the five-story pagoda of Tennoji Temple, known as the model for Rohan Koda’s novel “The Five-Story Pagoda,” and today the foundation stone remains. The Sky Tree can be seen from the high ground in the park, and the tree-lined avenue along the park road is called “Sakura-dori” (cherry blossom avenue), and is well known as a cherry blossom viewing spot.
