Ruins of Akasaka-mitsuke(Akasaka-mitsuke Ato)

National Historic Site

This is one of the 36 gates of Edo Castle, the main gates protecting Edo Castle. The “Mitsuke” is the place where the guards guarding the castle gate stand guard. In 1636, a stone wall was built to form the Masugata (square) shape, and in 1639, the gate was completed, in the form of a “Masugatamon” gate with two gates placed at right angles to each other. After the Meiji period (1868-1912), the gate was removed and most of the stone wall was also removed, but a part of it still exists and is a valuable structure. The remains of the moat and banks from Akasaka-mitsuke to Ushigome-bashi Bridge are designated as a national historic site as the remains of the outer moat of Edo Castle.
