Sengakuji Temple(Sengakuji Temple)

festivalperformance or narrative based on the story of Loyalty to the Emperor

The temple was founded in 1612 by the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is also famous for the graves of the 47 warriors who avenged the death of Asano Ueshogun in the Ako Incident, a well where the warriors washed Kira Uenosuke’s head after fulfilling their true intentions. The Ako Yoshishi Memorial Museum, located in the precincts of the shrine, was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Ako Urokuin. Many historical sites and artifacts related to the Yoshishi have been preserved. The Ako Gishi Festival, held every April and December, attracts many tourists to the town with a procession of the Gishi organized by the Zaikai Nisei Gakuin.
