Ishikawa Brewery

Long-established sake brewery where visitors can tour the building, which has been registered as a national tangible cultural property.

Ishikawa Brewery is a long-established sake brewery founded in 1917. It brews the famous sake “Tamanboast” and the local beer “Tama no Megumi”. Ishikawa Brewery products can be purchased at liquor stores throughout Tokyo and online. Using mineral-rich natural water pumped up from 150 meters underground, the products made with traditional techniques are all gems. Tamanjutsu is made using the traditional method of kanzukuri, in which brewers prepare sake only from fall to early spring, as is customary in the past.
The brewery, which has six buildings designated as national tangible cultural properties, is open for tours. In addition to the main brewery, the miscellaneous warehouses are used as archives, where visitors can see the history of the Ishikawa Brewery and valuable historical documents related to beer brewing from the Meiji period. The brewery also has a library that houses a beer kettle used in the Meiji period and a library, which is the attraction of a brewery tour at Ishikawa Brewery.
On the premises, there is also a direct sales shop “Sake Sera” where you can buy souvenirs and gifts, and an Italian restaurant “Beer Hut” where you can enjoy freshly brewed beer.

History

In 1863, Kazuyoshi Ishikawa, the 13th head of the company, began brewing sake, and in 1881, a new brewery was built at the current location. Eventually, he started brewing beer in response to the growing demand for beer and wine during the Meiji period (1868-1912). However, the business was abandoned after two years, and the current beer business was restarted more than 100 years later, resulting in the creation of the local beer “Tama no Megumi” in 1998.
