Tsubaki Tsubakiyama Exhibition: Light and Light Colors and Brushstrokes

Holding period

2023.03.18 〜 2023.04.16

First time in Kanto! Tsubaki Tsubakizan’s masterpieces under the tutelage of Watanabe Kazan are exhibited.

Tsubaki Chinzan was one of the leading literati painters of the late Edo period. While working as a low-ranking official of the shogunate, he studied under the painter Kaneko Kinryo and later under Watanabe Kazan. While the growing interest in foreign countries and the popularity of ukiyoe prints led to the creation of a wide range of genres of artwork, Watanabe Kazan energetically produced flower-and-bird paintings, which became very popular. In addition to flower-and-bird paintings, he also excelled at portraits, and established his own technique and style by incorporating the shading technique he inherited from Watanabe Kazan.

This exhibition is the first in the Kanto area to focus exclusively on Tsubaki-Tsubakiyama, and includes representative works that have been designated Important Cultural Properties. The exhibition will provide a fuller picture of the artist’s personality, along with episodes that reveal his seriousness, hard work ethic, and his penchant for immediately copying things that caught his attention.
