National Historic Siterailroad

In 1870 (Meiji 3), the first Japanese railroad construction between Shimbashi and Yokohama was planned, and the first survey stakes were driven under the direction of John Dyack under Edmund Morrell. In 1878, a sign was erected at the site as “the birthplace of the railroad in Japan,” marking the start of the railroad 0 leagues away. It is located southeast of the current JR Shimbashi Station, on the site of the former Shiodome freight station of the former Japanese National Railways, and part of the rails and platform from the time of its opening still remain. In 1965, the 0-league railroad starting point sign was designated as a national historic site as “the site of the starting point of the former Shimbashi Yokohama railroad”.
