Holding period

2023.01.14 〜 2023.03.12

Tracing the History of “Sanitary Administration” in Japan

The Meiji government, aiming to become a nation on par with Europe and the United States, studied and adopted sanitation from other countries, and in 1875 (Meiji 8) established the Sanitation Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs as an administrative agency specializing in sanitation. However, a few years later, cholera, which had caused enormous damage at the end of the Edo period, spread again and the epidemic repeated itself. Japan’s newborn sanitation administration was established through the fight against cholera.

This exhibition introduces the beginnings of sanitary administration, the government’s fight against cholera, and the establishment of a broader system for the prevention of communicable diseases other than cholera.
