Pray for physical and mental purification by ringing 108 bells
When one thinks of New Year’s Eve in Tokyo, many people probably think of Zojoji Temple, which is well known for its TV broadcasts. On New Year’s Eve, Zojoji Temple holds a “Jobon-e” at 23:00 to offer offerings of old amulets, talismans, tablets, etc., and burn them at the temple’s Jobon-e site. Offerings are not only accepted on the day of the Jyobon-e, but also in advance at the Ankoku-den Hall on the temple grounds.
From midnight on the first day of the year, the 108 bells are rung in groups of four, starting with the first bell rung by the head priest, in order to pray for the purification of body and soul.
