Beautiful people” regardless of gender or age
The term “bijinga” (portraits of beautiful women) became popular as a general term after the Meiji period. In Japan, beautiful women have often been depicted since ancient times, but attractive men such as Uriwara no Narihira and Hikaru Genji have also been depicted.
This special exhibition features paintings by popular beauty artists such as Uemura Shoen, Ito Shoha, Kaburaki Kiyokata, and Ito Shinsui, as well as male portraits by Shimomura Kanzan and Yoshikawa Reika, Western paintings by French female painters such as Rolandin, Van Dongen, and Denis, who have attracted much attention in recent years, will also be introduced.
A must-see is “Spring Evening” by Uemura Shoen. Painted in 1936, during the peak of his career, it depicts a young geiko smiling slightly at a woman’s whisper on a spring evening when cherry blossoms are falling. The expression, gestures, makeup technique, clothing, and hair tie are beautifully rendered, and one can sense Uemura Shoen’s aesthetic sense and ability to accurately depict the scene, making it one of the most popular works in the Matsuoka Museum of Art’s Japanese painting collection. There is also a cherry tree in the courtyard, and if you visit in late March, you can appreciate the masterpieces while viewing the cherry blossoms.
