Bright red Daruma dolls fill the precincts of the temple.

During the Grand Festival held on March 3-4 at Jindaiji Temple’s Sandaiji Hall, “Daigoma-o”, which is for the fulfillment of various wishes, will be held from 10:00 to 16:00, attracting many worshippers. In conjunction with the festival, an “Enki-Daruma (lucky charm) Market” will be held in the precincts of the temple.

Known as one of the three major daruma fairs in Japan, this is a grand daruma market with about 300 daruma stores of all sizes on the temple grounds. After purchasing a Daruma doll, visitors can go to the “Daruma Me-in-sho” (Daruma doll eye-opening place) located in front of the Gensan Daishi Hall, where a Buddhist priest will put the character “A” (meaning the beginning of things) in the left eye of the Daruma doll to open the eye. Once the wish is fulfilled, the Daruma doll can have the character “Un”, meaning the fulfillment of a wish, placed in its right eye. The Daruma doll with the character “Un” engraved on it is then presented to the temple as a token of gratitude. In addition, special Daruma Market gomafuda and limited edition Daruma Market red seals are also available.

This year, for the first time in four years, the festival will also hold an “O-neriri (parade) Procession”. From 1:45 p.m. on each day. In case of rain, the parade will be held indoors and closed to the public.
