The Okura Shukokan, formerly the Okura Museum of Art, is the oldest existing private art museum in Japan, where businessman Kihachiro Okura opened part of his home to the public as an art museum. Okura was the founder of the Okura Zaibatsu, and his collection included Buddhist art, paintings, and crafts from a wide range of genres in Japan and the East, many of which were damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Later, the collection was added to by a donation from his heir, Kishichiro Okura, and became the current collection of the Okura Museum of Art.
