Fukagawa Hachiman Festival (Tomioka Hachiman Shrine annual festival)

Holding period

2022.08.14

One of the three major festivals in Edo. The vigorous portable shrine is a sight to behold.

The Fukagawa Hachiman Festival is one of the “Three Great Festivals of Edo” along with the Sanno Festival at Hie Shrine in Akasaka and the Kanda Festival at Kanda Myojin. During the main festival, which is held once every three years, a portable shrine parades through the town, and water is poured over the mikoshi bearers as a purification ceremony.
The highlight of the festival is a combined procession of 53 large mikoshi (portable shrines), which attracts spectators with its vigorous “wasshoi” (shouts of encouragement) echoing throughout the town and the spiritedness of its bearers shaking the earth.
The grounds are also home to the Ichinomiya mikoshi, which is said to be the largest mikoshi in Japan, with its gorgeous decorations of pure gold and precious stones, and the Ninomiya mikoshi, which is one size smaller. 2022 is the year the Ninomiya mikoshi will be carried, so it is a must-see.
Due to the spread of the new coronavirus, the parade of the mikoshi by carriers was cancelled. The procession will be carried by cars.
