Experience the world of “Taisho Romanticism” at a cultural asset!
The Taisho period (1912-1926) was a time when a new popular culture flourished after the civilization was opened up during the Meiji era (1868-1912). The “Taisho Romanticism” that symbolizes the modern and glamorous culture of that time still captivates people today.
An event to convey the world of Taisho Romanticism will be held at the Hyakudan Staircase, a tangible cultural property designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in the Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. The Hyakudan Staircase refers to “Meguro Gajoen Building No. 3” built in 1935, and is the only wooden building still in existence. A long stair corridor with 99 steps connects the seven rooms where gorgeous banquets were held at that time. It is considered to represent the highest point of traditional aesthetics, and was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in March 2009.
The event will feature a display of works by Takehisa Yumeji, one of the most famous beauties of the Taisho era, a collaboration with the manga “Department Store Waltz” by Hiromi Matsuo, a popular illustrator who depicts Taisho Romance in a modern style, and a coffee room with retro stained glass (iced coffee, baumkuchen, and an original mask case for ³,000 per person), (1,000 yen per person with iced coffee, baumkuchen, and original mask case).
