Chrysanthemum Season Arrives at Yushima Tenjin this Year

Yushima Tenjin is known for its plum blossoms, but the autumn chrysanthemum festival is also a sight to behold. A wide variety of chrysanthemums are displayed in the precincts of the shrine, centering on “kakegai,” or hanging cliffs, and “bonniwa,” or tray gardens in which moss, plants, and trees are arranged on trays.
The “chrysanthemum dolls,” doll costumes made of crafted chrysanthemum flowers and leaves, are also a hot topic every year, and this year three dolls based on the NHK historical drama “Kamakura-dono no 13inin” will be on display. Chrysanthemums will also be on sale.
