All 17 Important Cultural Properties are exhibited.
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo opened in December 1952 and celebrates its 70th anniversary in fiscal year 2022. To commemorate this milestone, the museum will exhibit a total of 17 works designated as Important Cultural Properties among paintings, sculptures, and crafts from the Meiji era onward. Important Cultural Properties are valuable items that are only available for loan or public viewing, and this exhibition brings them all together in one place. Visitors will be able to see many famous works that have been introduced in school art textbooks, such as “Old Monkey” by Takamura Koun, “Black Cat” by Hishida Shunso, and “Salmon” by Takahashi Yuichi.
Even works that are now considered “masterpieces” were regarded as “problematic” works that established new expressions at the time of their release. The exhibition will also explore the secrets of art history that led to the designation of such works as Important Cultural Properties.
