Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Utensils

Holding period

2022.12.10 〜 2023.02.12

Full-size model of the alcove of a tea ceremony room and display of tea utensils

The Gotoh Museum of Art houses a number of masterpieces, including the national treasure “The Tale of Genji”. A full-scale model of the alcove of the museum’s tea rooms, “Kokeirou,” “Shoujuan,” and “Fujimi-tei,” will be displayed in the exhibition room, along with approximately 70 pieces from the museum’s collection of tea ceremony utensils.

In addition to kaiseki and charcoal implements, tea ceremony utensils related to warlords and feudal lords will also be on display. The tea utensils of Kobori Enshu, a tea master active from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period, are the focus of attention. Enshu was an advocate of “kirei sabi,” a style of rusticity that pursued splendor and beauty, and Enshu’s tea utensils, while simple, have an innocent charm.

As a special exhibit, meibutsu-gare (tea ceremony wrapping cloths) and chintz will also be on display (some exhibits will be changed during the exhibition period).
