The first garment given to a newborn baby. It is also written as “san-i. It was often made of durable and comfortable materials such as linen or cotton, and was worn after the birth bath, which was held on the third day (seventh day in some areas) after the baby was born. The gorgeous kimono worn by the mother with the baby in her arms during the first month of life (actually worn as a wrap around the baby) came to be called a “nurikata”. It is also known as kake-isho or noshime.
