Memorial service for Ako Yoshishi on December 14, the day of revenge

The incident in which Naganori Asano, the lord of the Ako Harima clan, was punished with seppuku (ritual suicide) for slaying Yoshinori Kira in the Matsuno-Ohashi corridor of Edo Castle during the Edo period has been depicted many times in Kabuki plays and movies as “Chushingura. The event is held at Sengakuji Temple in Minato Ward, where the Ako Yoshishi Cemetery and Memorial Hall are located, and many items related to the Ako Yoshishi have been preserved. Every year, on December 14, the day Ako Yoshishi avenged his lord, a graveside memorial service is held at 11:00 a.m., followed by a tea ceremony at 12:00 p.m.

Don’t miss the “Ako Gishi Procession,” a procession of 47 people dressed in Gishi costumes, parading in the middle of Tokyo in honor of the 47 Gishi who took revenge on the warriors. The procession starts from the Chuo Ward Office and passes through the Kabuki-za Theater, Zojoji Temple, Zaikai Nisei Gakuin Building, and Sengakuji Temple on the way. Every year, stalls are set up at Sengakuji Temple.
