Exhibiting works by Hiragushi Denchu, a master of modern Japanese sculpture
Born in Ibara City in present-day Okayama Prefecture, Tanaka lived in Taito Ward for a long time, but spent the last 10 years of his life in Kodaira City. This special exhibition commemorates the 150th anniversary of Hirakushi Denchu’s birth and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Kodaira City. The works of Hirakushi Denchu, a master of modern Japanese sculpture active from the Meiji to Showa periods and a recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit, will be presented in one place. The exhibition features gems from the collections of museums and art galleries throughout Japan, including “Tensei” and “Oryu Sensei” (Teacher Karasu). In addition, the earliest known Tanaka work has recently been discovered and will be exhibited for the first time in approximately 120 years.
