Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori

Holding period

2022.08.27 〜 2022.08.28

Awa Odori, the largest dance festival in East Japan, to be held indoors this year

The Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori Dance is a powerful event that attracts more than 1 million visitors, with approximately 10,000 people dancing to the lively calls of the dancers. Awa Odori is performed by a group called “ren,” which consists of dancers and musical instruments (shamisen, flute, gong, gong, shimedaiko, large drum, etc.). There are various types of “ren,” including graceful and glamorous “onna odori” (female dancers), heroic “odori” (male dancers), and “ohayashi,” a group that uses roaring sounds, unique melodies, and bamboo and barrels for narimonos.
The colorful costumes are also well worth seeing.
The 2022 festival will be held for the first time in three years. Unfortunately, the dance performances at the eight consecutive performance halls located north and south of Koenji Station that are set up every year will be canceled, and indoor stage performances with different atmospheres will be held at two halls in the 2 “Za-Koenji”. You can sit down and enjoy the performance in a comfortable theater.
