82 works of art passed down from generation to generation of the Imperial Family are on display.

Tokyo University of the Arts, where this exhibition will be held, is where Okakura Tenshin first systematically lectured on Japanese art history in 1890 at its predecessor, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Since then, the university has played an important role as an institution of art education and research up to the present day. This exhibition features 82 works, including masterpieces of the Imperial Household from the Imperial Household Agency’s San-no-Maru Shōzōkan, which houses paintings, calligraphy, crafts, and other works of art passed down from generation to generation in the Imperial Household, as well as the collection of the Tokyo University of the Arts.
The exhibits from the Geidai’s collection include works that enhance the exhibition content in showing various aspects of Japanese art, as well as materials that provide a glimpse into the way Japanese art has been studied and accepted, especially since the Meiji era, and the role Geidai has played as an educational and research institution. Many of the works presented to the Imperial Household were created by artists who were Imperial Household Artists and taught at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and both the Imperial Household and the University of the Arts are related in that both have protected, encouraged, and developed Japanese art in their respective capacities.
Must-sees include the National Treasure “Pictorial Record of the Mongol Invasion,” a picture scroll depicting the Genko invasion, and five other works (subject to change) that were designated as National Treasures last year for the first time in the Imperial Household Agency San-no-Maru Shokan’s collection. This is a rare opportunity to view a number of works that have been passed down through the Imperial Household, which has protected and promoted Japanese art.
