Edo Nyanko Ukiyoe Cat Zukushi

Holding period

2023.04.01 〜 2023.05.28

Unique Ukiyoe works featuring cats are exhibited.

Cats were the most frequently depicted animals in Ukiyo-e as pets. This exhibition features Ukiyoe paintings of cats by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and other Ukiyoe artists.

They are represented in all forms, from anthropomorphic cats that dance and go to school, to haunted cats, and even as a bill to ward off rats.

In the first half of the exhibition, five works from Kuniyoshi’s “Neko no touji” series, in which cats are used to represent letters, will be on display, and in the second half, the valuable masterpiece “Komaa jiguchi neko kawaii 53 biki,” which depicts a variety of cat figures. Feel the charm of humorous cats depicted in Ukiyoe.
