Kagurazaka Machibutai, Oedo Meguri 2023

Holding period

2023.05.20 〜 2023.05.21

Performing traditional arts at the first street event in four years

Kagurazaka is a pleasant place to stroll, with numerous narrow alleys extending around Kagurazaka Street and elegant cobblestone pavements just a short distance away. Kagurazaka Machibutai Oedo Meguri 2023″ will bring together artists active in the forefront of traditional performing arts, from young up-and-comers to veterans, in Kagurazaka’s Bishamonten Zenkokuji Temple, Akagi Shrine, Noh theater, and long-established kappo restaurants. A wide range of traditional performing arts will be presented, including performances on shamisen, koto, biwa, shakuhachi and other traditional instruments (by the Ohayashi Project, Tokiwazu Kazuei Tayu-ren and others), storytelling (by Kanda Yamaruki and others) and romance (by Higashiya Ittaro, Higashiya Mi and others), Noh and ta-kagura.

There are also programs that can be enjoyed by both parents and children, such as a performance of Edo-style marionette puppets and picture-story shows, and hands-on experience with shamisen and other traditional musical instruments. This year, the street program is back for the first time in four years. Visitors can watch the “Shinnai-nagashi” (flowing down stone-paved alleyways while playing the shamisen), the “Iori Uta” from the Shibata Hikiyama Festival invited from Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture, and performances and performances held on the main street.

Continuing from last year, Mr. Robert Campbell, who has a deep knowledge of Japanese culture, has been appointed as an ambassador. He will be delivering video clips of the “Kagurazaka Machibutai Oedo Meguri” tour along with performances of nagauta, koto music, and kodan (storytelling) at the Noh Theatre.
