Building Open House 2023 Memories of the Mansion

Holding period

2023.04.01 〜 2023.06.04

The exhibition features items related to the Asakamiya family and recreates life in those days.

Originally completed in 1933 as the main residence of the Asakamiya family, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum has been used as an art museum since 1983. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, the museum will celebrate its 40th anniversary in October 2023.

The exhibition focuses on the members of the Asakamiya family who were the masters of this mansion, and reproduces and exhibits the mansion space with furniture and furnishings from the period of the imperial residence. Photographs, video materials, restored original furniture, crafts, furnishings, and costumes will also be on display to introduce visitors to life in those days.

In addition to items from the Asakamiya family’s collection, costumes and artifacts related to the Asakamiya family that are held in various places in Japan will be “returned home” for this exhibition, providing a rare opportunity to see many pieces that are not usually seen in the museum’s collection. This is a rare opportunity for visitors to see a number of works that are not usually seen in the museum’s collection.
