One of the three major festivals in Japan, Nagatacho Hie Shrine’s annual festival
The Sanno Matsuri, a festival held in mid-June at Hie Shrine in Nagatacho. It is considered one of the three major festivals in Japan along with the Gions Festival in Kyoto and the Tenjin Festival in Osaka. It is also considered one of the three major festivals of Edo (Tokyo), along with the Kanda Festival of Kanda Myojin and the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival of Tomioka Hachiman Shrine, and features many lively and grandiose events. Highlights include “Sanno Taiko,” a Japanese drum beating in front of the worship hall around noon, and the “Mindaori Festival (Bon Odori)” featuring the Sanno Ondo (Bon dance), which is held in the evening. The “Shinko Matsuri” held every other year during the main festival is particularly noteworthy. A 300-meter procession of approximately 500 people, consisting of two imperial carriages and a miya-mikoshi (portable shrine), parades through the shrine from early morning until late at night.
*The Shinko Matsuri, Bon Odori, and Sanno Taiko drumming will be cancelled this year due to the new coronavirus infection control measures.
