It is considered one of the three major festivals in Japan along with the Gions Festival in Kyoto and the Tenjin Festival in Osaka. It is also considered one of the three major festivals of Edo (Tokyo), along with the Kanda Festival of Kanda Myojin and the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival of Tomioka Hachiman Shrine, and features many lively and grandiose events. Highlights include “Sanno Taiko,” a Japanese drum beating in front of the worship hall around noon, and the “Mindaori Festival (Bon Odori)” featuring the Sanno Ondo (Bon dance), which is held in the evening. A 300-meter procession of approximately 500 people, consisting of two imperial carriages and a miya-mikoshi (portable shrine), parades through the shrine from early morning until late at night.
