Hokusai Bird Park

Holding period

2023.03.14 〜 2023.05.21

A wide range of birds painted by Katsushika Hokusai and his family

Katsushika Hokusai, an ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period, created many works depicting birds. He is known for his excellent depictions of birds, which helped establish the genre of flower-and-bird paintings in nishikie.
This exhibition introduces the works of Hokusai’s school, including various types of birds and birds depicted as symbols that add depth and flavor to the picture plane, and conveys their appeal.

In addition to reading about the seasons, places, and thoughts of people expressed by birds, the exhibition also introduces an episode of “Autumn Leaves on the Tatsuta River,” in which Hokusai used real birds in his productions. Visitors are encouraged to experience the beauty of the birds and the excellence of Hokusai’s painting techniques as they interact with the various birds at the Bird Park.
