Yuzo Saeki: Landscape as Self-Portrait

Holding period

2023.01.21 〜 2023.04.02

First retrospective exhibition in Tokyo in 18 years

Live in the city, die in the city
Legendary Western-style painter who dedicated his life to painting

Yuzo Saeki (1898-1928), a painter who spent his short life in Osaka, Tokyo, and Paris, will celebrate the 125th anniversary of his birth in 2023, and his life has been colored by many dramas and legends. The works he created still radiate a strong luster that cannot help but stir the hearts of those who see them.
This exhibition follows Saeki’s footsteps in the three cities and examines the process of generating original Saeki art.

1. more than 100 carefully selected masterpieces are exhibited in one place
With the largest collection of Yuzo Saeki in Japan held by the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, and many masterpieces from museums and private collectors nationwide, this exhibition will provide an opportunity to rediscover the appeal of Saeki’s art and lead to new discoveries.

2. first retrospective exhibition in Tokyo in 18 years
Surprisingly, this is the first full-scale retrospective of Yuzo Saeki’s work in Tokyo in 18 years, since the exhibition “Yuzo Saeki: Path to an Artist” was held in 2005 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Nerima Art Museum.

3. numerous masterpieces depicting the streets of Paris to be savored in a space with red brick walls
The Tokyo Station Gallery is a space where the structural bricks from the time of Tokyo Station’s construction are used as they are in the exhibition rooms. It is truly an appropriate space to exhibit Saeki’s works, which are fascinated by the stone buildings and massive walls of Paris.
