The temple, founded by the famous ninja Hattori Hanzo Masanari and Senyu Nenmu Shonin, is a temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, and was founded as a memorial for Matsudaira Nobuyasu, the eldest son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The temple has a memorial tower for Matsudaira Nobuyasu and the grave of Hattori Hanzo Masanari, who was also known as “Oni Hanzo,” a master of the spear, and the spear given to him by Ieyasu, which is registered as a cultural asset by Shinjuku City. When the main hall was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in a war, part of the Honmaru Goten of Otaki Castle, the residence of Honda Tadakatsu, was relocated and used as part of the present main hall.
