Hometown Forest Plum Blossom Festival

Holding period

2023.02.04 〜 2023.03.12

Feel the arrival of spring in a local forest fragrant with plum blossoms

During the plum blossom season, 1,300 plum trees of about 120 varieties are in full bloom at the Fuchu City Museum of Natural History, including red and white plum trees donated by Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka, as well as double-flowered cold-red, white peony, and Chinese plum trees. During the Plum Blossom Festival, there are many events such as an outdoor tea ceremony, street performances, artisans’ crafts, and a call for haiku poems about plum blossoms.

There will also be hands-on events such as “Ume Tree Walk,” in which Takayuki Otsubo, chairman of the Japan Ume Society, will give an explanation while strolling through the ume garden; “Old House Exploration Tour,” in which visitors can walk around old houses in the park with an explanation; a special tea ceremony at a tea ceremony room; and “Ume Festival Handcraft Workshop,” in which visitors can make decorations related to ume trees.

Also, the museum will be illuminated at night for four days only on February 25 (Sat.), 26 (Sun.), March 4 (Sat.), and 5 (Sun.). A free night planetarium will be shown twice, at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with a 15-minute live commentary on the starry sky (numbered tickets will be distributed from 4:30 p.m. on the day). On March 12 (Sun.), there will be a Musashi Kokufu Taiko drum performance, where visitors can witness a powerful performance.
