Close-up of “Uncle” painted by Hiroshige Utagawa

The painter Hiroshige Utagawa, who created many masterpieces of landscape paintings, often included a charming character called “Uncle” in his paintings. This unique exhibition focuses on this uncle.

A close-up look at the various uncles painted by Hiroshige, including an uncle with an innocent smile, an uncle working hard at his job, and an uncle panicking in a pinch. By viewing Hiroshige’s masterpieces through the eyes of these people, viewers may experience a fresh impression of the works, or gain new discoveries by thinking about the conditions of the time. A wide range of works will be introduced, from masterpieces such as the Hoei-do version of “Tokaido Gojyosantsugi no Nouchi” to rare works rarely exhibited.
