Chihiro Art Museum Collection: Japanese Picture Books from Edo to Now

Holding period

2022.06.25 〜 2022.10.02

Learn about the evolution of Japanese picture books over the past 400 years, from the Edo period to the present day.

This exhibition will be held at the Chihiro Art Museum Tokyo, an art museum that exhibits original picture books from around the world, with a focus on the works of picture book artist Chihiro Iwasaki, who is best known for her watercolor paintings depicting children.
It is said that picture books became widely read in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868), when printing technology developed and printed books began to be distributed. This event introduces the history and expansion of picture books from the Edo period to the present based on the Chihiro Art Museum’s collection. The exhibition will introduce how Japanese picture books have changed and developed over the past 400 years from the Edo period to the present day, from traditional picture scrolls, to “kusa-soshi,” which were widely read in the Edo period and focused on illustrations, to “e-magazines” for children that spread after the Meiji period, to “ehon” published during the war, to “ehon” that are still read today. You can learn how Japanese picture books have changed and developed over the past 400 years from the Edo period to the present day.
