Sugamo Someiyoshino at its best

Holding period

Mid-March to early April 2022

View 2,000 cherry trees in Sugamo, the birthplace of Someiyoshino.

The Someiyoshino, Japan’s most famous cherry blossom variety, is said to have been bred by a gardener in Somei-mura (present-day Komagome, Toshima-ku) between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period, and Sugamo is believed to be the birthplace of the Someiyoshino.

Currently, more than 2,000 Somei-Yoshino trees are planted in the Sugamo area.

In honor of this, the Sugamo Somei-Yoshino Cherry Blossom Festival was held in Sugamo. Although the annual “Cherry Blossom Festival Parade” and “Sugamo Ekimae Goodwill Market” are not held this year to prevent the spread of infection, someiyoshino cherry trees are beautifully at their best.

Incidentally, Somei-Yoshino Sakura Memorial Park is located in front of Komagome Station, next to JR Sugamo Station. The park is planted with Edohigan cherry trees and Oshima cherry trees, which are said to be the original species of Someiyoshino cherry trees, and visitors can compare the two types of cherry trees.
