History

In 1872 (Meiji 5), Seiyoken was founded in Tsukiji, Tokyo, with the support of statesmen Sanjō Sanetomi and Iwakura Tomomi, as a pioneer of Western cuisine in Japan.Later, at the suggestion of Iwakura Tomomi, who had returned from a visit to Europe and America, founder Shigetake Kitamura opened “Ueno Seiyoken” in 1876 (Meiji 9) as a dining and social venue within the newly established Ueno Park.It became a glamorous social venue where royalty, nobility, and distinguished figures from various fields gathered, and it is said to have hosted several historic meetings. After the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the Tsukiji main branch, Ueno Seiyoken became the main establishment. At the time of its founding, Western cuisine was rare and few Japanese people had eaten beef, but after Seiyoken’s establishment, French cuisine became widely loved among people of the Meiji era.
