It is an old temple of the Myoshinji sect of the Rinji Sect, founded by Zen monk Reinan and founded by Ito Yukei, lord of the Obi domain in Miyazaki Prefecture. Since then, the temple prospered as a family temple of various feudal lords in Edo, but in 1859, it became the site of two attacks on the British Minister’s lodgings, and it suffered a brief period of disadvantage. Today, the Okushoin, Bakugen-tei, and backyard are designated as a National Historic Site (not open to the public) as the only surviving foreign legation building from the end of the Edo period. The temple is also actively involved in preserving the natural environment, and in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the temple, 2,800 trees of 45 species were planted on the temple grounds.
