water purification (filtering) plantimportant cultural property

Japan’s first modern sewage treatment facility, located in the middle of the Sumida River, was completed and put into operation in 1922, and continued to operate until 1999. The pumping station, in particular, is designated as a National Important Cultural Property because it preserves the history of modern sewage treatment. In addition to the pumping station, a water gate room and a sedimentation basin still remain, which can be seen up close by taking a tour that requires reservations. Also, once a year, an azalea viewing party is held on the grounds, where visitors can enjoy the azaleas in full bloom.
