Jindaiji Temple “Yakuyaku Genzan Daishi Grand Festival, Daruma Market

Holding period

March 3-4, 2024

One of Japan’s three Daruma doll fairs, Jindaiji’s Daruma doll fair

The largest of Jindaiji’s events is the “Yakuyakuwake Ganzandaiji Daisai” (Great Festival of the Three Great Masters of Yakuwake). Usually held on March 3 and 4 each year, the festival attracts more than 100,000 people who come from the morning to worship the spirit of Gansan Daishi. A document from the Edo period (1603-1867) states that worshippers “flocked to the temple from all over the surrounding area,” making the Genzan Daishi Grand Festival at Jindaiji Temple an event with a long history and tradition.
In conjunction with the festival, an auspicious Daruma market is held on the temple grounds to celebrate the power of Daishi-sama. As one of the “Three Great Daruma Markets” in Japan, Jindaiji’s Daruma Market is well known throughout the country as the place that brings spring to Tokyo. The temple grounds are lined with about 300 Daruma stores of all sizes, mainly Daruma doll stores.

On March 3 and 4, visitors can obtain special “Daruma Market” gomafuda and limited edition red seals for that day.
