Ome Grand Festival (held at Ome Grand Shrine in Kyoto on May 15)

Holding period

2023.05.02 〜 2023.05.03

The competition between the floats of each town is very powerful!

This historic festival is held annually on May 2 and 3. It is a locally-oriented event run by the community associations of the 12 towns in the Ome area. 2023 is the first time in four years that it has been held.

On the first day of the festival, the floats go around each town, and on the second day, traffic is restricted along Ome Kaido (Ome Highway) for a grand parade. Several floats compete with each other in a competitive show, also known as “kenka-bayashi” (fighting music), and perform taiko drums and other musical instruments. Each of the floats from the 12 towns has its own unique characteristics, such as Sumie-cho’s float with carved phoenixes and dragons, and Honmachi’s black lacquered float with embroidered sweetfish curtains and kylin carvings on the banners, etc. On the 3rd, the floats can be viewed from the Ome Kaido.
