Takehisa Yumeji Painted Letter Designs – Hand Lettering of Taisho Romance

Holding period

2023.04.01 〜 2023.06.25

Note the hand-drawn text design by Takehisa Yumeji.

Active mainly in the Taisho era (1912-1926), Takehisa Yumeji is known as a painter. In fact, he also showed his talent as a graphic designer and left numerous designs. This exhibition introduces his “drawn letter designs” for posters, book bindings, magazine and sheet music cover art, etc.

Calligraphy and manuscripts left in his own handwriting, as well as diaries and letters left in his private life, will also be on display, allowing visitors to experience Takehisa Yumeji’s diverse expression of letters. In addition to Takehisa Yumeji, the exhibition will also feature character designs by 10 painters and designers active in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, including Nakamura Furi, Fujishima Takeji, and Sugiura Nonsui.

On April 22 (Sat), May 14 (Sun), and June 10 (Sat) (all from 2:00 p.m.), a gallery talk will be given by the curator in charge (45 minutes). Photography is also permitted.
