Special Exhibition] Painting Japanese Landscapes: From Utagawa Hiroshige to Tabuchi Toshio

Holding period

2022.12.10 〜 2023.02.26

Masterpieces of Japanese landscape painting from the Edo period to the present day are on display.

Focusing on Japanese landscapes and nature, the exhibition features works by master landscape painters from the Edo period to the present. Works on display include “The Five Pilgrimage of the Tokaido Highway” and “Eight Views of Omi” by Hiroshige Utagawa, which depict lyrical scenes of inns and famous places, “Saotome” by Gyokudo Kawai, which depicts people living with nature, and “Wanaka Village” by Toshio Tabuchi, who is currently at the forefront of Japanese painting (all from the Yamatane Museum of Art). This is the first time that a series of four paintings by Takeshi Ishida, a Japanese-style painter active from the Showa to Heisei periods, entitled “Four Seasons in Oirase” (all from a private collection), will be exhibited together for the first time. Visitors can rediscover the charm of Japanese landscapes and nature through these masterpieces of landscape painting.
