Holding period

2023.03.07 〜 2023.05.07

Learn about the history of Tofukuji Temple as well as the full scope of Zen Buddhism culture.

The treasures owned by Tofukuji Temple, a Zen temple in Kyoto known for its fresh greenery and autumn foliage, are introduced at the Tokyo National Museum. Divided into five thematic chapters, from Chapter 1, “The Founding of Tofukuji Temple and Enji” to Chapter 5, “The Gigantic Temple Complex and Buddhist Sculptures,” visitors can trace the history of Tofukuji Temple and learn about the full range of Zen Buddhism culture that blossomed through exchange with the continent.

The “Five Hundred Arhats,” designated as an Important Cultural Property, is a must-see. After 14 years of restoration, this exhibition will be the first time that the 47 existing scrolls will be on display (they will be changed during the exhibition period). The works are masterpieces in which the ink and colors are in perfect harmony.
