The Paths Taken by the Two “Last Ukiyo-e Artists
Yoshiku Ochiai and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka were students of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period. Both were highly skilled ukiyo-e artists, and at the time, their popularity was split in two as good ukiyo-e rivals. Later, Yoshikazu began to paint newspaper nishikie for the Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun, the predecessor of the Mainichi Shimbun, in which he was involved as a promoter. Yoshitoshi, on the other hand, developed the warrior pictures he inherited from Kuniyoshi and painted numerous works.
Through the exhibition of Ukiyo-e paintings by these artists, we can look back on their lives during the period of Ukiyo-e’s decline.
This museum will be closed for an extended period of time from April 10, 2023 to fall 2024 for equipment replacement and building maintenance. This is the last exhibition before the closure, so please visit.
